Recently, New Middletown Elementary School celebrated Red Ribbon Week, a nationwide initiative aimed at encouraging students to make healthy choices and say no to drugs. While the slogan "Say No to Drugs" may sound simple, the conversations and activities held during the week reinforced just how critical that message is for young minds.
Students attended a powerful presentation from School Resource Officer (SRO) Clay Sailor, who shared the importance of making safe, drug-free choices. Class discussions and lessons throughout the week focused on building the confidence students need to make these decisions, both now and as they grow older.
The significance of Red Ribbon Week goes beyond catchy phrases. Statistics from the campaign highlight that youth who start using substances at an early age are more likely to develop long-term addiction issues. Studies show that early intervention and education—like the programs incorporated during Red Ribbon Week—are effective ways to prevent substance abuse before it starts.
At South Harrison, we believe in equipping students with the knowledge and skills they need to lead healthy, drug-free lives. Red Ribbon Week at New Middletown Elementary wasn’t just a series of fun activities—it was an investment in their future, fostering resilience and empowering students to stand up to peer pressure.
Together, we are building a safe, supportive community where students know they have the strength and resources to say no to drugs—and yes to a bright future.
