In the fast-evolving job market, ensuring that students are not only ready for college but also equipped for the workforce is more crucial than ever. South Harrison Community School Corporation's College & Career Readiness (CCR) Center has spent the past year diligently working towards this goal, hosting an array of activities aimed at exposing students to a multitude of career paths and equipping them with vital employability skills.
Last Year's Highlights
The CCR Center kicked off the academic year by immersing 60 seniors in Career Exploration Internships, where they gained hands-on experience while earning academic credit. Another 26 students took part in a Work Based Learning Capstone, applying classroom knowledge in real-world settings, further underscoring the practical aspect of their education.
Special events like College GO Week and the College APP Day offered seniors from Corydon Central and South Central the unique opportunities for campus visits, job shadows, or community service, aligning their academic pursuits with career exploration. The interactive JA INSPIRE Career Fair and ASVAB military career training test provided valuable insights into potential career paths.
The introduction of industry professionals, such as Jeremy Killebrew from Local 502 Plumbers, Pipefitters & Service Technicians, into classrooms bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical industry demands. Visits from higher education institutions and military representatives broadened students' perspectives on future opportunities.
Looking Ahead
This semester, the CCR Center is poised to build on last year's successes with even more enriching activities. A county-wide Career Fair scheduled for March at the Harrison County Fair Grounds promises to be a cornerstone event, offering extensive networking opportunities with local businesses and industry leaders.
Upcoming events also include Manufacturing Day, which will connect students directly with leaders in the manufacturing sector, and College APP Day, aimed at guiding seniors through the college application process. These initiatives are tailored to ensure students not only meet but exceed the new requirements set by House Bill 1002.
The Impact
By integrating real-world experiences with classroom learning, SHCSC's CCR Center is playing a pivotal role in preparing students for the demands of today's job market. Whether through securing internships, engaging in direct dialogue with industry professionals, or exploring post-secondary educational opportunities, students are being equipped with the tools necessary for success.
As we move forward, the CCR Center continues to be a beacon of innovation in education, committed to developing programs that prepare our students for successful careers and meaningful contributions to the workforce in Indiana and beyond. Join us as we continue to build pathways to the future, one student at a time.
