Career speakers have returned for the 2022-2023 school year! The 8th graders in Exploring College and Careers class with have the opportunity this year to hear from a variety of speakers presenting on their career. This allows the students to learn first hand from people who work in a specific career field and provides them time to interact and ask questions about the career. Hopefully, students will be able to then use their own personal knowledge of themselves as well as the career presented to determine if it is a good fit for their future. In August we had two career speakers, Jim Schreck (Conservation Officer) and Kendall McKiever (Chemical Engineer). Below is a little information about their careers.
Conservation Officer - Conservation officers protect people and the environment, ensuring fish and gaming laws are not violated. They also investigate reports to crops by wildlife. To get into this career, a person needs to be 21 and attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and complete specialized classes by the Department of Natural Resources. This would be a good career fit for someone who is a good communicator, enjoys being outdoors, and wants to help others.
Chemical Engineer - Chemical engineers design chemical plant equipment and create or improve processes for manufacturing chemicals and products. To get into this career, a person needs a four year Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. This would be a good career fit for someone who is good at math and science, enjoys problem solving, and wants to work in a constantly growing and changing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) field.
