On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, the South Harrison Community School Corp. Board of Trustees convened at the SHCSC Administration building for its monthly meeting to discuss educational issues and act on items requiring Board approval. Below are the highlights of the meeting.

Special Presentations

  • Science of Reading Grant Award - Director of Elementary Curriculum Diane Owen shared an exciting update on the progress of the Corporation’s adoption of the Science of Reading approach to reading comprehension and literacy the State of Indiana now supports. She shared that South Harrison is the recipient of a $299,844 grant awarded by the Indiana Department of Education’s Literacy Center for teachers, instructional coaches and administrators to participate in 40 hours of professional development that starts with a two-day literacy audit by leading Science of Reading expert Dr. Jan Burkins. Following Dr. Burkins’ visit, goals are set for each SHCSC elementary building and staff will participate in two book studies, complete online course modules and upload classroom instruction videos to receive feedback. So far there have been 80 SHCSC staff signed up to participate in the program, each receiving a $2,000 stipend.
