As we dive into another exciting month, we wanted to share a fun and educational activity our students engaged in! For this activity, we focused on enhancing our reading and math skills through creative and interactive lessons.
Reading Adventures
This week, our students enjoyed the delightful story “Arnie the Donut.” Together, they collaborated to identify key story elements such as:
- Characters
- Setting
- Problem
- Solution
Following this group activity, each student independently sequenced the book's scenes using the format of First, Next, Then, Last. It was wonderful to see their comprehension skills shine as they retold the story!
Math with a Twist
In math, we transformed our classroom into a bustling donut shop! Students became Donut Bakers and were tasked with gathering donut orders from various teachers throughout the school.
Here’s what they accomplished:
- Written Orders: Students recorded each order in:
- Standard Form
- Expanded Form
- Word Form
- Place Value Chart: They filled out a place value chart to visualize their orders.
- Sprinkle Addition: Finally, they colored the correct amount of place value blocks to represent the sprinkles on their donuts!
After completing their tasks, students hand-delivered their final products to their 'customers.' It was a delightful way to reinforce the concept of Place Value while having fun!
