Sixth-grade students became environmental scientists in the lab as they explored sediment runoff in aquatic ecosystems. Using “cup” sandcastles to model erosion, they observed how water flow carried sediment into a simulated waterway, mimicking real-world runoff. Through this hands-on investigation, students analyzed the impact of erosion on water quality and aquatic life, considering how increased sediment can affect plant growth, oxygen levels, and species populations. By making connections to real ecosystems, students gained a deeper understanding of human impact on the environment and the importance of erosion control.
